Zune software installation error 1317 resolved
Mike Update: Microsoft recently rolled out a software update for zune, which fixes known bugs in installation process and other minor issues. The update also includes firmware version 1.2. Please update to newer version and see if it fixes the problem before you proceed.
Recently lot of people had issues with the zune software. Like can’t connect to zune or unable to install the software. I even addressed the zune connectivity issue a few days back. But this one is for those who are having trouble installing the zune software.
So, as far as I know this is what is happening, when the installation process reaches 95% it stops for a bit and then goes to 100% and throws an installation error. And for some it gets stuck at 95%.
There are a few possible reasons for this error and can be seen in ZuneInstall.log file with various error codes. For example Click Start > Run > Type %temp%\ZuneInstall.log and click OK. I’ll discuss each of them with error codes and provide a possible solution.

For Zune — Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C:\DOCUME~1\\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\Zune.msi.
This problem occurs if the Zune installation file is deleted from the Temp directory during the installation process.
Solution: If you have other USB devices that are connected to the computer, disconnect one USB device at a time, and then try to install the Zune software after each disconnection. Repeat these steps for all USB devices that are connected to the computer. After you successful installation, reconnect the USB devices.
For Zune — Error 1609. Users is not a valid group. Could not apply security settings.
This problem occurs if the Users group has been renamed.
Solution:
- Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
- In the left pane, expand System Tools.
- Under System Tools, expand Local Users and Groups.
- Under Local Users and Groups, click Groups.
- In the right pane, locate the group that was formerly named “Users.”
- Right-click the group, and then click Rename.
- Type Users, and then press ENTER.
- Close the Computer Management window.
- Reinstall the Zune software.
Zune — Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\WMPTheme.WMPSkinMngr\CLSID.
System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
You get this error when windows installer cannot update the above registry key during installation.
Solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929701/
For Zune — Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music”
The reason for the error is that it’s trying to create a folder in a directory that you can’t access.
Official solution from Microsoft:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each line:
Windows XP Home Edition
Type the following commands:
cacls.exe “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents” /T /G BUILTIN\Administrators:F
cacls.exe “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents” /T /E /G System:F
cacls.exe “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents” /T /E /G BUILTIN\Users:R
cacls.exe “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents” /T /E /G Everyone:C
Windows XP Professional
Type the commands for Windows XP Home Edition, and then type the following additional command:
cacls.exe “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents” /T /E /G “BUILTIN\Power Users”:C
Our unofficial solution:
Thanks to colithium, a commenter at zuneinsider who came up with the following possible solution.
(XP Pro and Windows 2000)
As “Administrator”
(XP Pro only)
Open “My Computer” > click “Tools” menu item > click “Folder Options” menu item > click “View” tab
In “Advanced Settings” list box > uncheck “Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)” check box > click “OK” button
(XP Pro and Windows 2000)
Open “My Computer” > click “Local Disk (c:)” > open “Documents and Settings” folder (or)
Click Start > Run > Type %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\ and click OK
Right click “All Users” folder > click “Properties” context menu item > click “Security” tab
In “Group or user names:” list box > click “Administrators” > In “Permissions for Administrators” list box > check “Full Control” (if not checked)
Click “Advanced” button > check “Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects” (XP Pro) or
“Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions” (Windows 2000)
Click “OK” button > click “Yes” button > wait for completion > click “OK” button (closes “All Users Properties” dialog box)
Install “Zune” software
(XP Pro only)
Now re-enable “Simple File Sharing”:
Open “My Computer” > click “Tools” menu item > click “Folder Options” menu item > click “View” tab
In “Advanced Settings” list box > check “Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)” check box > click “OK” button
Hope this helps and finally please make changes at your own risk.

how do you find the error number? Whenever I try to install it, the installation gets to 100% and then goes to the screen with the girl screaming. The number 1603 appears twice at the bottom of the page you said to open(”MainEngineThread is returning 1603″). By the way, if you answer this, go slow(I’m computer-retarded) thanks

Keep getting the same message. Zune software is up to date. The latest version of the Zune software is already installed on this computer. no update is available.
The only option available is to close the dialog box.
Is this the best that Microsoft can come up with????

So when I try and install Zune, I get a pop up that says “Zune Software Installation cannot continue until you have installed one or more required updates. Windows update must be updated to run this program” and then gives me a link. I went to the link, downloaded the update and installed it and I just keep getting the same error over and over.

Alright, hopefully I can help someone. If you downloaded the “SOFTWARE UPDATE 3.*” and ran into the problem “MICROSOFT UPDATE REQUIRED”, I might have a solution for you. If you go to the link that is displayed, (ie required WGA but firefox didn’t) there is a SECOND ZUNE software download available. I’m in the middle of downloading right now. But now, all you have to do it make sure you have the “UPDATES” from the website downloaded and installed and the “INSTALLATION” should work fine.

Hi,
I downloaded Zune 3.0 software from http://www.zune.net. When I ran it, it tries to get updates but ends up with a message ‘No zune software update found’. It only gives me an option to close the application. Someone in this forum suggested to start BITS, Windows installer and Automatic Updates services and then restart Zune software. Still Im facing the same issue. Pleaseeeeeeeee give me a solution. I never expected Microsoft to come up with such a buggy Software.
